Just a few years ago, mention “blue oceans” and you were seen as an expert.
Yet it’s the new form of identity theft.
Every few months, another “branding guru” slithers out of the algorithm to whisper wisdom that sounds less like business advice and more like a seizure dressed in designer jargon.
They don’t sell expertise. They sell expensive confusion.
Like watching someone have a midlife crisis—only they invoice you $50K to witness it.
Here’s the evidence.

The Guru Parade (“False Experts Got Talent”)
I’ve seen and heard it all. Here’s a compilation I made up from the wild promises, poses and pitches I have seen, heard and witnessed over the years.
- BRANDING GURU 1: “I don’t use fonts. I liberate letterforms from their typographic prisons.”
- BRANDING GURU 2: “My process requires you to unlearn everything, including how to breathe.”
- BRANDING GURU 3: “I don’t create brands. I manifest parallel universes of possibility.”
- BRANDING GURU 4: “My framework? Downloaded from the cosmos using Starlink during a juice cleanse.”
- BRANDING GURU 5: “Work with clients? No. I adopt brand orphans and raise them as my own.”
- BRANDING GURU 6: “My methodology is so pure, Unicorns study it for inspiration.”
- BRANDING GURU 7: “I don’t design logos. I midwife brand souls through the birth canal of capitalism.”
- BRANDING GURU 8: “My rates? Whatever number makes you cry, plus 20%.”
- BRANDING GURU 9: “I don’t do discovery calls. I conduct séances with your target market’s ancestors.”
- BRANDING GURU 10: “My playbook isn’t available online. It’s whispered at 2 a.m. over encrypted phone lines and paid in bearer bonds.”
- BRANDING GURU 11: “I once trademarked a feeling. It was later elected to public office.”
- BRANDING GURU 12: “I boosted a brand’s engagement so high their customers proposed marriage to the logo.”
- BRANDING GURU 13: “Clients who hire me don’t measure conversions. They measure miracles per quarter.”
- BRANDING GURU 14: “I helped a startup go from invisible to omnipresent. Google actually asked us to slow down.”
The False Expert Pattern:
They aren’t talking about your business. They’re talking about their mythology.

The Math of Fake Experts
- Guru’s invoice: $75,000
- Actual strategy delivered: 0
- Crystals blessed: 47
- Revenue generated: Still waiting for the universe to provide
While they’re “manifesting universes,” your competitors are manifesting customers.
While they’re aligning your chakras, your sales are aligning with zero.
Getting the Help to Grow: How to Spot the Difference
Fake experts sell slogans.
Real experts sell results.
Fake experts mystify the simple.
Real experts simplify the complex.
Fake experts quote the cosmos.
Real experts quote the balance sheet.
The Blue Oceans Test
If your branding expert can’t explain their process in plain English over coffee, you don’t have an expert. You’ve hired an interpretive dancer with a retainer fee.
If they talk more about their aura than your audience, run.
Because here’s the truth:
Real branding isn’t mystical. It’s practical. It’s about making your business the obvious, irresistible choice in a market full of beige wallpaper.
Your Zero-Fluff Fake Guru Checklist
1. Can they explain their process in plain English over coffee?
If it sounds like performance art instead of strategy, you’ve hired a brand interpretive dancer, not a strategist.
2. Do they quote the balance sheet—or the cosmos?
Real experts talk profit. Fake ones talk chakras and unicorn-inspired frameworks.
3. Do they ever get into specifics, or just slogans?
Fake gurus mystify what should be simple. Real ones simplify complexity into actionable steps.
4. Have they built an actual business?
Or is their only business selling “secrets” about building businesses? Ask for receipts, not smoke.
5. Are they flashing rented cars and rented lifestyles?
“Look at my Gucci, my Lambo, my rented beach house.” All bling and zero substance.
6. Is there outside validation, or just their own puffed-up press releases?
Real experts show up in real media. Fake experts only post their own glowing blurbs.
7. Do they get defensive or dismiss your questions?
Legit people welcome scrutiny. If you ask, “Show me proof,” and they riot? That’s a red flag.
8. Do they promise moon landings and overnight results?
“Get rich quick,” “manifest universes,” or “no downside, unlimited upside”—all shiny hype with no real ROI.
9. How many of these red flags did you hit?
One or two? Maybe you’ll peek at the freebie. Three or more? Stand back. Five-plus? Don’t just walk—run.
