Brand Strategy for the AI Era: Own a Problem, Not a Prompt

Reading Time: 7 minutes
David Brier talks brand strategy in the AI Era

Here’s what nobody at Interbrand or Landor is going to tell you.

AI is not the threat. AI is a mirror. And what it’s reflecting back at most brands is a wall of beige so thick you could spread it on toast.

Better prompts won’t save you. Better tools won’t save you. The brands breaking through right now share one thing in common: they own a problem so freaking clearly that AI can’t erase them, competitors can’t copy them, and the market can’t forget them.

This is brand strategy for the AI era. And it starts with a question most brands are too comfortable to ask.

What problem do you own that nobody else is willing to?

The Real Threat Isn’t AI. It’s the Assembly Line of Average.

Let me be precise. Because vague language creates vague strategy.

AI doesn’t make brands obsolete. It makes average brands louder. Every competitor now has access to the same tools, the same data, the same “insights.” The output is a mirror maze of identical messaging. Same tone. Same structure. Same promises. The wall of beige, just generated at 10x speed.

This is not a technology problem. It’s a courage problem.

For over forty years, I’ve watched brands rise and fall. I’ve been the guy CEOs call after they’ve burned so much cash on marketing that their spouses think they have a coke habit. I’m like rehab for your brand, except instead of getting you clean, I get you profitable.

And here’s what four decades have taught me: the brands that disappear first in any disruption are never the weird ones. They’re the ones who confused “professional” with “invisible.” The ones who let committee-driven consensus produce defensible but rarely bold positioning. The warm tofu on a tabletop.

The antidote is not more content. It’s more clarity. Specifically, clarity about the problem you solve and the noise you eliminate.

I call this Problem Ownership. And it is the single strategic decision that determines whether everything else you do works.

Brand Value = The Problem You Own ÷ The Noise You Eliminate

Before we go further, let’s talk about the burger.

There are three levels of any craft.

  • Practitioner: The burger arrives at the table.
  • Professional: It’s plated nicely.
  • Genius: The first bite explodes with an ingredient you didn’t see coming.

The difference is the amount of future incorporated into every decision. That’s the lens I apply to everything. And when you apply it to brand strategy in the AI era, it reveals something ugly.

Most brands are operating at the practitioner level. They solve a problem. The burger arrives. Fine.

Some brands reach the professional level. They solve a problem with polish. The burger is plated nicely. Better, but still forgettable.

Almost nobody reaches the genius level. They own a problem so completely, and eliminate so much noise around it, that the experience itself becomes the differentiator. The first bite changes you.

That’s what this equation captures:

Brand Value = The Problem You Own ÷ The Noise You Eliminate

Small problems create friction.

Solve something minor, and people appreciate it. They won’t pay a premium for it. You’re a commodity with a smile.

Big problems create demand.

Solve something painful and specific, and people seek you out. You’re a solution.

Bigger problems create authority. Own a problem so fundamental to your customer’s life or business that solving it changes everything. Now you’re the only call they make. Now you’re operating at genius level.

The division by noise is where most brands bleed value without realizing it. Noise is the hidden tax on every buying decision. Every conflicting expert opinion. Every generic promise. Every “best-in-class” claim means absolutely nothing. Every small animated character with an accent is selling you insurance when you just want to know if you’re covered.

When you eliminate that noise around a specific problem, you become the obvious answer. Not the loudest answer. The only answer.

Alex Hormozi created a brilliant Value Equation for offer creation: value goes up when the dream outcome is bigger, and the perceived likelihood of delivery is higher, divided by time delay and effort. It works beautifully for structuring an offer. But brand strategy operates one level above the offer. The offer lives inside the brand. And the brand is built on problem ownership, or it’s built on nothing.

How This Works in the Real World

Let me show you what this looks like when it’s actually working, not just sitting pretty in a positioning document that gets updated every three years.

The Boutique Fitness Studio

Most fitness brands compete on equipment, class variety, or price. They add noise. Every ad sounds the same. Every promise is interchangeable.

One fitness studio I worked with stopped competing and started owning. Their problem: Get meaningfully stronger in 30 minutes. That’s it. No fitness hacks. No contradictory expert advice. No generic programs. Just one clear problem, solved with fanatical intention.

They stopped being a gym. They became the answer to a specific question. And their pricing reflected it.

The B2B SaaS Company

Most SaaS brands own features. “AI-powered.” “Enterprise-grade.” “Seamless integration.” If you’ve read one SaaS homepage, you’ve read them all. It’s a sea of polished turds.

A client of mine shifted to owning this problem: Your team is drowning in tools they don’t use. The noise they eliminated was the endless parade of feature comparisons, implementation horror stories, and ROI calculators that require a PhD. They named the problem their customers felt every day and eliminated everything that made solving it confusing.

Their brand value didn’t go up because they added features. Nobody gets paid for adding features. We get paid when we remove friction.

The Professional Services Firm

Most consultants and agencies own methodology. “Our proprietary framework.” “Our unique process.” The client does not care about your methodology. The client cares about their problem.

The firms that break through own a specific outcome tied to a specific problem: We get founder-led companies past $10M without the founder becoming the bottleneck. The noise they eliminate is the consulting industrial complex: 6-12 month discovery phases, committee-driven consensus building, six-figure decks that gather dust while the problem gets worse.

Traditional agencies optimize existing brands. Brand intervention rescues struggling ones. They are not the same assignment.

Notice the pattern across all three. The brand didn’t get louder. It got clearer. And clarity, in a world of AI-generated noise, is the freaking superpower.

The Three Levers of Problem Ownership

Once you commit to owning a problem, three levers determine whether you become the obvious answer or just another voice in the noise. Think of them as the ingredients in a dish that shouldn’t work but does. The cronut principle.

1. Increase the transformation you promise and deliver.

This is not about exaggerating. It’s about going deeper than anyone else is willing to go. Most brands solve surface problems. The brands that own their category solve the problem beneath the problem. Don’t just save someone time. Save them from the dread of waking up to another day they’ll never get back. Solve the unbearable, not the improvable.

2. Increase belief that you can actually deliver it.

Proof is not a testimonial page with headshots and first names. Proof is woven into everything. How you talk about the problem. The specificity of your language. The case studies rendered as stories, not bullet points. The willingness to name what most brands won’t: the real cost of getting this wrong. Every story has a shelf life, and the story that says “trust us because we said so” expired somewhere around 2007.

3. Decrease time, friction, and emotional cost.

This is where most brands bleed value by the gallon. They make the customer work. Long discovery calls. Complicated pricing. Vague next steps. They optimize for internal process and call it “thorough.” The customer calls it something else entirely.

Every ounce of friction you eliminate increases your brand value because it decreases the noise between the problem and the solution. Unify where others fragment. Simplify where others complicate. The floor is not the goal.

The AI-Era Reality Check

Here’s what the branding industry doesn’t want to admit out loud.

AI can generate better copy than most agencies. It can analyze data faster than any strategist at Prophet or Siegel+Gale. It can optimize campaigns in real time. But it cannot own a problem. It cannot decide what’s worth caring about. It cannot inject soul, pulse, or a viewpoint into a brand.

The most human brands win. They always have. AI just made the stakes higher and the timeline shorter.

The brands that will disappear in the next five years are not the ones with bad AI strategies. They’re the ones who let AI write their strategy and ended up sounding exactly like everyone else. Brands without a soul, without a pulse, without a viewpoint.

I don’t help brands decorate. I help brands differentiate. And in the AI era, that distinction is the difference between being the obvious choice and being the option nobody remembers.

What to Do Next

Start here. Right now. What problem does your brand own that nobody else is willing to?

Not a feature.
Not a benefit.
Not your “why.”

A problem your customer feels in their bones that your competitors are either ignoring or making worse.

If you can’t answer that question in one sentence, you don’t have a brand strategy. You have a noise strategy. And in the AI era, noise is a losing position. You’re not competing with better brands. You’re competing with better prompts. And the prompts are getting better every day.

The only thing that cannot be prompted is a brand with the courage to own something real.

When every competitor sounds the same, different is the voice we hear. And the brands that get heard are not the ones with the best AI strategy. They’re the ones with the best problems, the ones bold enough to be unmistakable, unapologetic, and impossible to imitate.

That’s brand strategy for the AI era. Everything else is just noise.

Final Word: The Future of Brand Strategy in the AI Era

Brand strategy in the AI era isn’t about competing with AI.

It’s about using your human senses and your ingenuity to steer this tool. Done right, and your brand becomes more discoverable.

Sidestep that responsibility, and you will produce garbage and add to the noise in the marketplace.

It’s about using AI to amplify the part of your brand that cannot be replicated:

Your convictions.
Your perspective.
Your problem.
Your transformation.
Your humanity.

Solve bigger problems.
Build bigger trust.
Create bigger differentiation.

This is the brand strategy that wins now.
