Sam Cox created a bold and compelling brand, is a 28-year-old illustrator born in Kent, England, a multi-million-dollar auction sensation and known as âMr. Doodle.â
Too many brands take themselves too seriously. Sam is a prime example of how one artist takes his art so unseriously that the world stops, applauds, and asks for more.
Where others see white walls, Sam sees âdoodles.â
And even with clients that include MTV, Adidas, and Cass Art, his imagination is restless. And he puts it to good use.
Whatâs most impressive besides the quantity and quality of his output is his relentless pursuit once he gets a vision. Just a few days before he unveiled this masterpiece, he shared this on his Instagram account:
âYou Canât Shrink Your Way to Greatness.â
Business guru Tom Peters wrote this in his international bestseller, The Circle of Innovation: You Canât Shrink Your Way to Greatness.
To fulfill his vision, Sam used:
- 951 quarts of white paint,
- 401 cans of black spray paint (for the exterior),
- 286 bottles of black drawing paint (for the interior), plus
- 2296 pen nibs with four different sized pens
All in pursuit of a vision.
Without a vision to serve, weâre simply going through day-to-day actions. Serving a bigger purpose and mission is the way to outperform what others see as impossible.
This is a prime example of the degree of boldness necessary to have an impact today, to rise above the noise of similar bits of content, creativity, and ingenuity, and to successfully do business in todayâs world.
I have seen Samâs newest creation, and it IS a masterpiece.
Itâs also an example of being bold and unapologetic. Even in the video documenting this creation, Sam took an unorthodox approach capturing this in stop motion with 1857 photographs taken from September 2020 to September 2022.

How to Build Your Own Compelling Brand
Having a good product product or service is nice.
But there are plenty of good products that 1) either fail or struggle needlessly, or 2) are outperformed and eclipsed by an inferior one.
How is this possible.
They took the necessary steps to differentiate their offering, to reframe the conversation (I discuss this with the master of reframing and flipping the script, Oren Klaff), and have a different conversation than what everyone else was having.
The Compelling Brand Formula
This appears simple.
It’s staying the course that’s hard.
If you have a brand and are want to stand out, follow each of these points:
- Do it large,
- Implement this without diluting it, and
- Go so big, it redefines the game.
- DO IT LARGE means go bigger than anyone else. Not by baby steps. Make them bold. Make them exponentially more than anyone else is doing. It might frequency of communication. Or how often you’re seen. Or where you’re seen.
- IMPLEMENT WITHOUT DILUTING THIS MEANS stay focused on the bigger difference you’re introducing. Don’t get distracted. Be hyper-focused on, “Why does what we’re doing matter? Why should anyone care?”
- GO BIGGER THAN YOU THINK IS POSSIBLE. REDEFINE THE GAME means however big you think you can go, challenge that. Look with fresh eyes. Ask yourself, “If I were my audience, would this grab my attention by the short hairs?”
This is a fun ride.
It’s also challenging.
The only thing more challenging?
Ignoring this, and trying to stand out by doing the same actions all your competition is doing.
